Brown Belt Grading Syllabus

Grade 3, Biu Tze - Brown Belt

The Third grade within the Wing Chun System is all about a good understanding of Biu Tze. Upon having a good understanding of the form the Student will learn about the recovery of the centre line.

The Student must be able to talk through the form and answer questions relating to the form. Biu Tze is Wing Chun’s recovery form therefore the student must show this concept when performing techniques.

  • The Development of Lok Sau (Bong Lap) is continued with footwork which makes it more dynamic but with increased intent.
  • The development of Chi Sau and Gor Sau techniques are continued with the student learning more complex techniques and combinations with the emphasis on creating the opponent to make a mistake and taking full advantage, and using the recovery theory.
  • Free Hand Techniques are developed and students are taught to deal with multiple strikes with a variety of techniques with the emphasis on dealing with the first strike correctly.
  • The Student at this level should show good fluidity, energies, positions and distance when performing techniques
  • At this point of a students development there is a massive emphasis on self defence so the student must be able to defend themselves in a variety of self defence scenarios.
  • A student must be able to demonstrate good body structure and be able to force opponents off balance with little effort

Requirements

The student shall have the ability to:

  • Perform the third free hand form - Biu Tze without help.
  • All movements of the form must be sharp and fluid.
  • The student must demonstrate the correct Energies and way of breathing throughout the form.
  • Talk through each movement of the form with the correct terminology.
  • Teach the form to a student or back to the instructor.

Questions to be posed to the Student at the end of the Form:

The Student is to have the ability to break down three to four different parts of the form which may be picked out by the instructor on the Grading Day.

The Student must answer the following question - What does Biu Tze Teach You?

The student shall be able to show multiple defences against the following – without being shown:

  • Defence against a Straight Punch – Outer Gate & Inner Gate.
  • Defence against a Hook Punch.
  • Defence against a Straight Kick – Outer Gate & Inner Gate.

The student must be able to show gate swapping techniques, Both Inner to Outer Gate & Outer to Inner Gate. Combining the following Wing Chun Blocks against a variety of Strikes:

The Student must be able to attack and correct their "own centre line" within a technique without hesitation and showing their intent.

The Student is to Play Open Chi Sau with a variety of senior grades within the class.

The Student is to demonstrate the following:

  • Good use of Footwork & body mobility and structure.
  • Good variety of techniques within Chi Sau and Gor Sau.
  • Good use of forwarding energy.
  • Good use of disengaging mentality.
  • Good Concentration, Focus and Mental Attitude.
  • Be able to create striking opportunities (openings).

Self Defence:

The Student shall be subjected to a variety of different scenarios each of which the student has to defend themselves from a variety of opponents.

The Student will be pressure tested under adrenal stress:

Scenarios
  • Bear hug from the Rear.
  • Bear hug from the Front.
  • Head lock for both Sides of the Student.
  • Floor pin - in the half mount pin position
  • Floor pin - in the mount position

The Student must also demonstrate a variety of Wing Chun strikes against pads with increased power and ability from the second grade.

The student shall have an advanced understanding and the ability to talk about and demonstrate the following:

  • Wing Chun Centre Line Theory.
  • Inner & Outer Gate Theory.
  • Body Structure Theory.
  • Multiple Directional Defence Theory (MDD).
  • Multiple Directional Offensive Movement Theory (MDOM).
  • Low Line Kicking Theory (LLK).
  • Quick Release Techniques (QRT)
  • Chi Gerk (Sticky Legs)
  • Basic Close Quarter Combative Ability (CQC)
