Class Details
A Typical Class
Every class is started and finished with a bow to show respect to the training environment, fellow students and more importantly, your instructor
The group classes are always opened with a simple stretch, this is to get tired limbs and stiff joints warmed up and the students in to the right frame of mind. There is not a physical work out, unless we are training in semi contact or full contact sparring which only applies to senior grades.
As each class is themed, the students are pre-framed of what the lesson is to consist of, i.e. forms, techniques, pad work, Chi Sau, sparring, ground work etc. Although the classes are of mixed ability, students will train predominantly with people of the same ability to build up confidence and learn at their own speed and level.
Based on the theme or subject matter being taught, the class may then be split in to two or three groups so that students of similar levels can train together
Having a theme for each class helps the student understand what he or she is going to learn. The themes are based around self awareness, self confidence, speed, power and techniques. Exercises are demonstrated are then drilled which aids with coordination and most students see results in a matter of just a few weeks.
Each student has their own training program which is tailored to suit your goals; the training program is devised upon joining the club. Progressive Wing Chun understands that everyone has different reasons for learning Martial Arts or self defence and choosing the correct club is paramount in today’s society. These goals and objectives are monitored periodically with feedback from the student and during grading periods.
To help with students learning the class may be split up in to groups of around the same ability.
If the class has been split up for part of the lesson, the class will be bought together towards the end of the class so that everyone has a chance of training students of different levels as training with student at a higher level reduces learning time.
Throughout every class the instructor will give the opportunity for students to ask questions about what he or she is doing.
At the end of the lesson the class is wrapped up with what the lesson was about and any questions answered by the instructor.

Progressive Wing Chun promotes the student to have their own opinion of techniques and at a certain level of training each student forms an opinion of what he/she like or dislikes etc. this can be based on personal experience, i.e. you have tried and tested something that worked or didn’t work in a situation.
To aid the student form these opinions, the instructor may teach part of technique but the student has to fill in the gaps which helps the student to think for themselves.
Progressive Wing Chun teaches every student to look for a weakness in their opponent and exploit it; after all, a weakness is a weakness, no matter how small. I.e. if you had a tall person and short person then there is no point teaching the short person to try and hit the tall guy in the head, we teach them to strike low so that they are not over stretching etc.
Although everything in the Wing Chun System works, Students will always develop a personal preference to certain techniques based on their level, technical ability and experience. We at Progressive Wing Chun promotes that given that you put in the training and gain the understanding you should not have a preference but understand that you should adapt accordingly to the circumstance. This is because Wing Chun is not sided, i.e. everything you can do with the left you can do with the right. Bruce Lee developed his own concept of Jeet Kune Do based on this concept. After all it translates as "the way of the intercepting fist."

The Martial Arts Industry is very open to politics, opinion and criticism. We train and promote a non political environment where everyone is welcome and egos will not be tolerated.
We have a very unique open way of teaching and students are promoted to ask questions about what and how they do things.
We do not believe in the 'golden technique' that you hear on occasion from other clubs and instructors. We teach techniques that have been tried and test and work in the real world.
Progressive Wing Chun has its own code of conduct whereby during every class you should show respect to the Instructor, Assistant Instructors, fellow students, training area (dojo) and training equipment.
Children’s Classes
Children have the opportunity to train with Progressive Wing Chun from 5yrs and upwards. The curriculum differs slightly to the adult classes based on their physical ability and mental focus. The Children’s classes consist of basic self defence drills, pad work, fitness and team games and exercises. We also cover character building and essential life skills.
The children’s class begins with a warm up whereby the children run around in a circle and we teach them difference between the left and right and also help them to identify different body parts, such as “left elbow touch the floor”, “right knee touch the floor” and so on. They may have run or hop or jump around the room depending on the various exercises that the instructor sets out during the lesson.
We help them to develop their characters and imagination by getting them to imitate different animals which make various noises or move in a certain way. We also teach them maths games with numbers and help them develop their memories by doing different activities on different numbers.
The end of each lesson is finished of with a game of dodge ball whereby the children have to run from one end of the room to the other without being hit by a soft ball. The key points for the children are to have fun whilst learning different skills
Private Tuition
Progressive Wing Chun also offers Private Tuition. This is open to anyone who would like to train on a one to one basis. We also cater for small groups of up to four friends if preferred. Students have the option to train privately in addition to the weekly group classes, or they can just train privately, which may suit your current life style.
Private tuition can quickly boost your ability as most students will lean up to 60-70% faster than training in just the weekly classes. Like the weekly classes, a training program devised for each private student, which has realistic goals and objectives. The goals and objectives are set based on the student’s level or requirements, which may be based around confidence, discipline, respect, self defence and so on.
Progressive Wing Chun also understands that some people might be self conscious or have low confidence. Therefore training privately can help students dramatically build up their confidence and their ability before training in the weekly classes.
Progressive Wing Chun also caters for vulnerable adults and children. We can train with people who may have been abused, have learning disabilities and social or emotional problems. However Progressive Wing Chun understands that a person's vulnerability will depend on their circumstances and environment.
Training privately might be more suited to theses individuals and each case will be considered independently.
